Twice a year, the infamous “kicker” ranking gives football fans a topic to talk about and sometimes leads to heated discussions. In our office, the new summer ’18 ranking led to only happy reactions though. Three players we work with are among the best Bundesliga pros at their respective positions.
Serge Gnabry earns himself the rating „international class“
In the second half of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season, TSG Hoffenheim managed to climb from 7th to 3rd rank and thus qualified for the Champions League. FC Bayern were the only team to score more goals. With eight goals and seven assists in fourteen games Serge Gnabry had a big impact on Hoffenheim’s surprising performance. Consequently, he was rated 3rd best striker of the Bundesliga. The one-year loan to Hoffenheim to get more playing time really paid off. For the second time in a row since his return from London, the 23-year old who also feels comfortable on the wings and in central midfield finished with a double-digit goal count and looks well-prepared for his new challenge at FC Bayern. Robert Lewandowski, Hoffenheim teammate Andrej Kramaric and Serge are the only three strikers to earn the rating “international class.” We are very proud of Serge who we support in social media and marketing.
Wolf and Havertz climb into the top 10 of offensive midfielders
In addition, two other players who trust in our services made the top 10 of offensive midfielders. Marius Wolf played a fantastic second half of the season with Eintracht Frankfurt. Their efforts were rewarded by winning the German cup. In the kicker ranking Marius comes in 5th among offensive midfielders. In the off-season he joined BVB and will be seen running up and down the wings at Signal Iduna Park in the upcoming season.
The youngest player to make the ranking comes in 8th among offensive midfielders. Kai Havertz of Bayer 04 Leverkusen just became the youngest player with at least fifty Bundesliga caps. The 19-year old is already firmly established in the Bayer squad. He was also recently awarded the golden Fritz-Walter medal by the German Football Association – the highest award for German youth players. Previous medalists include Mario Götze and Marc-André ter-Stegen.
The kicker ranking – causing discussions since 1956
The German football ranking is published twice a year by the sports magazine kicker during the summer and winter break respectively. The ranking is established by the magazine’s editors and based on the actual performance of the players in the previous half year rather than looking at theoretical abilities or potential. Besides the Bundesliga fixtures, the editors also take into consideration matches in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and international fixtures with the respective national teams.
